French Lick, Indiana
(subject to change) |
General Description:
This area is a step back in time to the days of Al Capone when he brought his private rail car to French Lick to gamble and “take of the waters” but it is also modern in that it has a new casino and newly renovated hotels. A must see is the huge dome in the West Baden Springs Hotel. The Indiana Railway Museum is here offering a 1-¾ hour ride 20 miles into the countryside and featuring a 2200-foot tunnel. Try your hand at gambling or just walk the beautiful grounds surrounding the hotels. I dare you to try the water! Afternoon tea is still served at the French Lick Hotel.
Travel Description:
After crossing the Sherman Minton Bridge (Interstate 64) take US 150 to French Lick. This is an easy drive except you have to use the Interstate to get across the river into Indiana. With a mid-morning start the traffic should not be too bad. There is a pretty good climb up the Indiana hills just after crossing the river but many of the KYANA members have made it in Model T Fords, so it’s not that bad.
Total round trip distance:
Approximately 120 miles
Roads:
Two lane for the most part except for the portion over the river
Speed:
35 to 45 miles per hour depending on how fast you want to drive
Costs:
Access to the grounds, hotels and casino is free. There is a fee to ride the train but we do not have the costs currently.
